Esta celebración sucedía durante la segunda semana de octubre. Empezaba con la elección del prioste y de su comitiva y ayudantes.
Esta celebración sucedía durante la segunda semana de octubre. Empezaba con la elección del prioste y de su comitiva y ayudantes. El prioste y sus acompañantes llevaban las figuras de la Virgen y el Espíritu Santo en procesión hacia la capilla de San Miguel, en San Rafael, parroquia de Otavalo. Delante del prioste desfilaban los «Pendoneros»: doce indígenas que portaban banderas rojas con astas de más de dos metros que terminaban en cruces de hierro. Delante de ellos iban los músicos indígenas y, al final, la banda de pueblo. Los Pendoneros desfilaban en zig-zag, agitando las banderas. Al llegar, la procesión dejaba las figuras religiosas en la iglesia y en la entrada se colocaba una enorme cruz hecha de catulos secos. La comida, bebida y la pirotecniaeran imprescindibles.
This procession took place during the second week of October. It began electing the prioste and his entourage and assistants. The prioste and his companions carried the Virgin and Holy Spirit figures in a procession to San Miguel’s chapel, in San Rafael, parish of Otavalo. In front of the prioste marched the “Pendoneros”: twelve indigenous people carrying red flags with poles over two meters long ending in iron crosses. In front of them were indigenous musicians, and at the end, the town band. Pendoneros marched in a zig-zag pattern, waving the flags. Upon arrival, procession placed the religious figures in church, and at the entrance, they placed a huge cross made of dried catulos. Food, drinks, and fireworks were essential.
